I have constructed several versions of the K3PGP laser preamplifier. It's a rather sensitive detector based on a PIN diode connected directly to the gate of a JFET (meaning that good shielding is mandatory). The detector pictured below is mounted in a shoebox with a 110mm lens on the other side, to collect light and focus a narrow field onto the detector.
